《山水,山碎》平衡傳統與當代元素,展現歷史過去如何作為藝術創意及政治諷刺的靈感來源。本作遠望似是恆久經典的宏偉山水景象,令人聯想到象徵達觀哲理的傳統國畫。若然仔細觀察,便會發現雅致脫俗的完美風景並非以筆觸描繪,而是以極為細緻的方格構成。李君毅摒棄畫筆,而是在作品重覆蓋印以軟木製成的小型方章,創造出雄偉壯觀、方格精細的水墨作品。這種創作方式啟發自北魏時期的刻紋石碑,印章則仿效國畫印鑒,以及傳統版畫的雕刻木板。
作為台灣水墨大師劉國松的門生,傳統國畫培養出李君毅睿智前衛的大膽視野。他生於台灣,中國大陸文化動盪過後於香港就學,因而他把作品置於兩岸的歷史及現況之間。這個創作系列始於1988年,其中最早的例子為《萬歲,萬睡,萬萬碎》,以諧音為題直截提出他對帝制中國的政治諷刺。他以支離破碎的方式展示整片風景,從而反映他對國家意識的想法。山水景致作為歷史及文化身份的象徵,他卻將之全然瓦解,化為零碎拼圖,帶來一片疑惑。有鑑水墨畫傳統著重細緻筆觸,以表達新儒學中理性致學思維的更高目標,李君毅則沿用其標準的創作方式,把事物的客觀探索轉為對現狀的疑問。他的藝術創作巧妙精湛,意念周全,集懷舊與革新於一身,在回憶往昔的同時,更致力建立全然獨特的當代視覺語言。
