在西方現代藝術運動創意迸發的推動下，劉國松很快便在六十年代果斷脫離抽象表現主義，建立其獨有的風格。劉國松的個人畫作方式結集東西風格及哲學，揉合大膽的動勢筆觸及革新的非筆墨技法，使中國山水畫傳統復生。在這個關鍵的早期階段，他更加以改良其粗筋密紋的「劉國松紙」。傳統以來，中國藝術家喜於平滑畫面上創作，避用粗糙的綿紙。然而，對劉國松來說，綿紙的自然紋理不論在深度、氣氛及視角上均可帶來無盡的可能性。
