劉國松於1969年開展其備受稱譽的太空圖系列，在數年來的創作中以客觀具體的幾何圖形，重新定義其表現抽象風格。與普遍觀點相反，此系列作品並不單單啟發自太空人在阿波羅八號上所拍的地球照片，他早在阿波羅號成功登陸月球前，便開始在畫作上方融入圓形圖案，從傳統花燈的明亮光環取得靈感。
劉國松看過阿波羅號的影片後，把太空探索的意念連繫至國畫的重要傳統。畫家素來視宋代以來的傑構為典範，經常以高聳超然的角度描繪壯闊全景，如同天界神仙居高臨下的俯視。因此《地球何許》及《月球》系列不僅令劉國松細想超脫無邊的宇宙，更使他反思傳統國畫哲理──尤其對超越凡世與肉體存在的渴求加以探索。《明月當空》印證劉國松畢生重新定義水墨媒介的革新創作，展現深邃無際的宇宙想像以及身臨其境的感官體驗，刻畫形態、紋理、面貌與色彩的大膽並置。
