Condition
This work is generally in good condition. There are minor indentations on the top and bottom of the work and hairline craquelures throughout with the most obvious being in the center between two figures which is only visible upon close inspection and under raking light. Having examined the work under ultraviolet light, there appears to be no evidence of restoration.

汪建偉的早期藝術生涯以油畫創作為主,本作《無題》是這個時期的後期作品。一九五八年汪建偉生於四川,一九七五年文化大革命進入尾聲,他被下放到農村,上山下鄉的生活持續了一年半,接著加入解放軍服役六年。此時汪建偉與所有藝術運動處在隔絕狀態,例如七十年代末在北京發展起來的星星畫會。一九八三年退役後,他在成都畫院擔任保管兼資料員。直至一九八七年從浙江美術學院(現中國美術學院)畢業,汪建偉的藝術家之路才漸起苗頭 。這個時期的西方文化潮流開始進入中國;學院所在地杭州,更是國內當時西方資訊最流通的地方之一。
自美院畢業後五年,汪建偉決定放棄油畫,他在這五年間創作的油畫是那個時期最具標誌性的藝術作品;同在八十年代末,有許多藝術家仍在為尋找路向而掙扎。汪建偉的獨特之處,或許在於他不只能夠將在學院所學的寫實風格運用自如,更將之提升至成為一種探索油畫另類意義的方法。一九九二年創作《無題》之前,汪建偉學習了許多有關西方藝術家的知識,達利是其中一位,但對他影響最大的是弗朗西斯·培根。畫中二人蹲踞在地上,身影投落在空洞的背景之中,一白色箭頭指向上方,這些元素明顯展示他對這位於本作完成同年去世的傑出英國藝術家的崇敬 。
在當時的中國藝術界,玩世現實主義和政治波普藝術開始合流,汪建偉的創作卻別樹一幟;他在本作中用大塊色彩塑造流暢柔和的人物,蹲踞的農民形象來自畫家對上山下鄉經歷的回憶。多年後,汪建偉成為蜚聲國際、專注理論基礎的多媒體藝術家,他說:「我小心翼翼,不讓我的創作成為一種體制思維模式的一部分。因此我對那介乎中間的東西感興趣,我稱之為『灰色地帶』」1。,從其早期創作的《無題》,以及從去年起在紐約古根海姆美術館完成的多媒體裝置藝術展覽《 時間寺 》,都可見到汪建偉執意拒絕一切既定和已知的理念,其手下作品在不同層面上均言之有理。從八十年代末至九十年代初,汪建偉的油畫創作備受矚目,其傑出之處尤其在於他能夠將早年所吸收的藝術風格和知識,迅速轉化為其獨特風格的基礎。
