cast seated in dhyanasana with the hands in dhyanamudra, wearing robes chased with floral borders, open at the chest to reveal a wan symbol, the full round face with downcast eyes flanked by trailing ribbons and large earrings, beneath a crown with representations of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, all supported on a separately cast lotus throne, wood stand (3)

Condition

There are losses to two leaves of the crown, and one jewel is missing from the back leaf. There is a casting flaw to the hands and on the left side of the face. There are holes in the left knee and in the lap. the surface has minor nicks and other signs of age-appropriate wear, and there is a reddish-brown residue in the crevices. There are breaks and losses to the ledge on the inside of the stand and one incised character reading zuo (left). There is a loss to a section of the footring. One lotus petal has a casting flaw, and there are holes in two petals. There is a chip to the tip of one petal, and a crack to another petal. There are minor nicks and other age-appropriate wear.

Amitabha is a celestial Buddha and is the principal Buddha in the Pure Land sect, popular in East Asia. He presides over the Pure Land of Sukhavati located in the west, and is also one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, each of whom represents one of the five qualities of the Buddha. Amitabha represents the wisdom of observation.
