the figure cast seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus pedestal, with both hands in vitarkamudra, wearing loose-fitting robes, the broad face with downcast eyes and gentle smile flanked by pendulous ears, beneath a prominent ushnisha covered with tight curls and surmounted by a jewel; the mandorla in the shape of a lotus petal, pierced with lion, elephant, goats, dragons, the 'Eight Precious Objects' and Garuda, all enclosed within a border of flames, supported on a waisted stand (2)
Condition
The Buddha figure: There is a dent and resultant crack on the lower right edge. The red pigment covering the back of the stand is faded and has losses. There is also wear to the green pigment and gilt-lacquer. There is damage to one finger and a loss to two fingers on the figure's right hand. The back is unsealed and lacks the back plate.
The mandorla: One of the figures in the Garuda group is missing an arm. There is a hole, old repairs and a crack below the central opening. The mandorla has been screwed in the stand. There are small losses on the right inner edge of the flame border. Traces of the gilt-lacquer remain.
The stand: There are losses on the stand's left lower front. Traces of gilt-lacquer remain.
All three pieces show signs of age-appropriate wear.
