註:世人皆謂潘天壽性格奇崛耿烈,作畫亦是霸悍無人可比。是幅寫於執教杭州國立藝專期間,教書之餘,梳理資料,寫成〈中國繪畫史〉,又與吳茀之、諸聞韻等結「白社」,志在研究、繼承中國文人畫傳統,此亦其一生中最為平淡寧靜的日子。故筆下畫風偶現飄逸,足令後人見其性格中的另一面。
本幅僅於畫面下方畫幽蘭一叢,清竹一枝,大部份空白則行書錄詩,此類構圖應借鑑自明唐寅等人折枝花卉。蘭竹全從畫家少年時所臨習〈芥子園畫譜〉來,中鋒用筆,蘭葉在左,搖曳舒展,花兩朵,似有幽香從畫中沁出;竹枝在右,取以橫勢,用筆短促勁挺,與蘭相得益彰,整體一派輕柔婉麗,非潘畫中常見,與其論畫隨筆曰「空中無人,水流花開,惟詩人兼畫家者,能得個中至致」至為相合。畫中所書乃潘天壽自作詩二首,常見其錄於蘭竹題材作品,書風則是一九三○年代典型面貌,潘字從〈瘞鶴銘〉入手,參以黃道周、倪元璐筆意,轉折方硬,結體緊湊,有跌宕起伏之勢,亦是其個性之流露。
