註：世人皆謂潘天壽性格奇崛耿烈，作畫亦是霸悍無人可比。是幅寫於執教杭州國立藝專期間，教書之餘，梳理資料，寫成〈中國繪畫史〉，又與吳茀之、諸聞韻等結「白社」，志在研究、繼承中國文人畫傳統，此亦其一生中最為平淡寧靜的日子。故筆下畫風偶現飄逸，足令後人見其性格中的另一面。

本幅僅於畫面下方畫幽蘭一叢，清竹一枝，大部份空白則行書錄詩，此類構圖應借鑑自明唐寅等人折枝花卉。蘭竹全從畫家少年時所臨習〈芥子園畫譜〉來，中鋒用筆，蘭葉在左，搖曳舒展，花兩朵，似有幽香從畫中沁出；竹枝在右，取以橫勢，用筆短促勁挺，與蘭相得益彰，整體一派輕柔婉麗，非潘畫中常見，與其論畫隨筆曰「空中無人，水流花開，惟詩人兼畫家者，能得個中至致」至為相合。畫中所書乃潘天壽自作詩二首，常見其錄於蘭竹題材作品，書風則是一九三○年代典型面貌，潘字從〈瘞鶴銘〉入手，參以黃道周、倪元璐筆意，轉折方硬，結體緊湊，有跌宕起伏之勢，亦是其個性之流露。
