the vase of baluster form, finely carved in openwork with seven chilong clambering on its side, two of them vying for a ‘flaming pearl’, the other writhing around the rim, the cover similarly carved with two further chilong, the teapot of rounded square form, carved in high relief, one side with a peony, the reverse with a lotus, the cover with a raised bud finial suspending two loose rings

An approx. 2.5 by 2.5 com section of carved openwork on the cover of the vase has chipped off and is missing (corresponding more or less to the tail of one of the two chilong and a section of clouds). There is a minute bruise to the extremity of the ear of one chilong on the cover and expected further occasional nibbling along the edges. The vase itself is generally in good condition with expected wear or occasional minute nicks to the edge of the carving, likely to be original. The colour of the stone is even and the piece finished to a smooth polish. The actual colour is consistent, if not somewhat warmer, less grey compared to the catalogue illustration. The teapot and its cover are in good condition. There is some light occasional nibbling to the edges of the petals of the flowers carved in high relief, most likely original to the carving.
