從八十年代初，王天德便是實驗性水墨藝術先鋒，積極推動水墨這一傳統媒介走向當代藝術。其水墨的風格不但向傳統致敬，更嘗試發展出一種強調創作過程的抽象中國藝術。王天德以點燃的香或菸在宣紙上「畫」出水墨語彙，取代了一般水墨畫上的題跋。置中的文人士袍以如山動勢描繪而成，令人聯想到山水畫作。作為技藝超群的水墨畫家及書法家，王天德致力保存傳統水墨畫講究的「水墨感覺」，然而其構圖及創作技巧則徹底脫離傳統元素。本幅《焰》於2006年創作，當年更適逢藝術家參展紐約大都會藝術博物館舉行名為「筆墨」的首個中國當代畫家展覽。
