the larger comprising a padlock and key, intricately engraved with a central panel of the ‘Three Star Gods’ (Fu, Lu and Shou) bordered by floral panels on each side and flanked by two larger end panels, each enclosing one of the twins Hehe erxian, the brass patinated to a brownish-yellow colour; the smaller engraved with a floral design with two petal roundels and a fruiting branch surrounded by stylised floral corner panels, the separately made ends with flower heads, some with copper centres, the underside with two further leafy flowers, each with a copper flower

There are tiny chips to the edges of the larger padlock, and general surface wear, oxidisation and minor losses to detail. to the surfaces and general surface wear. The smaller padlock and lock mechanism have similar wear. (The mechanism of the lock is unusual and more complicated than most. The key can only be fitted once the outer end has been swung aside to allow access and this is achieved by pressing one of the raised flowers at one end downwards, to release the lock part way. The key can then be inserted to release the lock the rest of the way).
