Condition
Laid down on an old 18th century mount, cut at the bottom. A few small brown spots some surface dirt especially at the corners. Two areas on the paper creating two wrinkles to the right side of the sheet. Overall strong and in good condition. Sold mounted and framed in an eighteen century French frame.

These two figures of naked soldiers resting over their shields, perhaps two prisoners, most probably relate to one of Cambiaso's many decorative schemes executed for private palaces. His style here appears schematic and essential, as it so often is in his drawings, but all the same the heavy and broken lines together with the skilful use of wash create a strong and powerful image. The broad shapes of the two soldiers and their shields are skilfully combined, resulting in a motif which one can easily imagine in an elaborate monochrome decoration. The old inventory number to the left of the mount (which has been reduced) could be the one of the Genoese collector Santo Varni (1807-1885).
