Francesco Panini, son of Gian Paolo Panini, was one of a number of accomplished artists who worked in his father's studio satisfying the high demand for paintings and drawings in his manner, which were very fashionable at that time, to embellish the Roman palaces but especially to be sold to the many foreigners and travellers on the Grand Tour.  The Basilica of St. Peter for its importance and magnificence, was very much a preferred Roman subject and Francesco made a number of drawings, both of the exterior and the interior.  In the present sheet the artist's has chosen as his focus the central nave leading to the famous Bernini's baldacchino, one of the meraviglie of Rome.  Gian Paolo Panini , his father, had chosen the same viewpoint in several paintings depicting the interior of the Basilica during his career, especially when commissioned to record special events and visitors to St. Peter.1
