This is a good example of Giandomenico's drawings related to garden sculpture.  As Byam Shaw wrote, these are 'unmistakably sculptural in conception, with their pedestals and their balanced poise.'1 They are generally single figures, as here, and surely inspired by Giambattista's similar studies which George Knox connected to the sculptural decoration of Villa Cordellina.  Giambattista worked there in 1743 when his son was only sixteen, but Giandomenico could have seen them also in 1757, when both artists were working nearby at Villa Valmarana.  Byam Shaw noted that some of Giandomenico's drawings were executed from existing sculptures, but others were possibly intended as designs for additional statues for Villa Cordellina.
These sheets, included the present one, bear an old numbering in the same hand at the upper left corner.
