This unusually bosky scene for Troost can be compared with two other similarly pastoral gouaches in the de Grez Collection, Brussels,1 and two more formerly on the art market.2 The majority of Troost's very decorative landscape gouaches incorporate Rhenish motifs, derived both from the paintings of Herman Saftleven and from the artist's own first-hand observations made during the course of his extensive travels in the Rhineland, where he worked for the Elector Johann Wilhelm in Düsseldorf. Rather more intimate and spontaneous compositions such as this are relatively rare in his work.
