Although the old inscription on the verso of the present work suggests that Verkolje based his composition on one by Bartholomeus Breenbergh, the prototype appears in fact to be a work by Adriaen van de Velde, by whom a signed and dated drawing of 1664 with much the same composition is in Angers (Musée Turpin de Crissé, inv. MTC 4983).  Another, less elaborate, variant of this drawing with slightly different staffage and buildings, was sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 8 November 2000, lot 73.
