This drawing is the design for the decorative vignette adorning a large map of America, etched by Gilliam van Gouwen and published by Carl Allard in 1696. The image is, however, a rather fanciful representation of the people and fauna of the New World, of considerable exotic charm, but no great scientific accuracy.

Most of Tideman's drawings are much sketchier in execution, closer in style to the work of artists such as Gerard de Lairesse, but a few other more carefully drawn works like this are known, such as the fine signed and dated drawing of The infant Hercules wrestling with snakes, formerly in the Unicorno Collection.1
