The present drawing of two nude cavaliers is a preparatory study for Chasseriau's Return from the War, one of a series of paintings that he executed in 1844 for the Grand Staircase at the Cour des Comptes in the palace on the Quai d'Orsay, Paris. Due to a fire in the palace in 1871, many of these paintings were destroyed, though some survive and are now in the Louvre. For comparable preparatory drawings for this series see L.A. Prat, op. cit. 1988, p. 913.
