1941年，美國海軍委託查爾斯與蕾·伊姆斯（Charles and Ray Eames）用他們的模壓膠合板技術為受傷士兵設計一款輕便的夾板。他們最終得出此款設計，配合身體構造之餘，無需過多接合點和零件。輕盈穩妥的成品不僅為海軍解決了一大問題，隨後更直接啟發伊姆斯夫婦創作了家喻戶曉的伊姆斯壓合板座椅。
