Graduating three years earlier from the École des Beaux Arts d’Hanoi, Le Pho explored the dialogues between Eastern and Western traditions in Vietnam, paving the artist as the distinguished 20th century master of Vietnamese silk painting. In the present Lot Le Bain, Le Pho traced every characteristics of his forte as a painter, conveying the essence of feminine beauty via the inherent softness of the silk medium. In the painting, Le Pho deliberately elongates the lady in the painting to emphasize her innate elegance. The colour laid over the silk brings forth the fine ink outline of the woman’s body, insinuating a subtle youthfulness. With fine brushwork resembling Chinese calligraphic lines, Le Pho’s mastery in the medium of silk effectively captures the abstract quality of beauty and grace.
