  • bronze
of rectangular section, the pear-shaped body rising from a high splayed foot to a waisted neck and galleried flared rim, a band of pendent trefoil petal lappets encircling the mouthrim, the exterior divided into two registers by a raised double-rib band interrupted by a pair of lion mask handles, the upper register engraved with designs of cloud swirls and a moon with traces of parcel gilding, the lower register with a phoenix and a lotus, the patinated surface of a warm coppery-brown colour

Condition

there is a 1.5cm hole to the base, possible added for the purpose of draining water. There are traces of gilding at the neck, foot and handles. Other general surface wear.

Hausmann’s hypothesis about the cast hole in the centre of the base of this and other similar vessels is that these were fixing holes, through which the vessels were bolted to the altar or private table to prevent them being stolen.
