Giuseppe Canevaro was born in Zoagli in 1803. From a young age he showed a keen interest in sailing, and by the age of twelve he had embarked on his first big adventure by sailing to Cuba on the sailing boat Calypso, "with the shirt he was wearing and his mother's benediction."

By the age of twenty Giuseppe had been made captain and had moved to Lima. There, in 1830, he married Francesca Valega, with whom he had twelve children.

Giuseppe played a key role during the Italian unification process by first offering political asylum to Garibaldi after his battles with the French Consul and later on financing Cavour by donating the equivalent of £350,000 for hospitals during The Resurgence.

Giuseppe’s achievements included being named Consul of the Sardinian kingdom and funding the Banco Nacional del Peru with income from the exportation of natural fertiliser (guano).

Vittorio Emanuele II, who had named him Commendatore, awarded him for services to his country by conferring on him the Order of Santi Maurizio and Lazzaro and the title of Count; three years later he received from Umberto I the title of Duke of Castelvari, with land in Mercatale, Val di Pesa, and, in 1884, the title Duke of Zoagli.
