the square panelled top above a widely flaring waist carved in openwork with ruyi heads flanked by confronted kui dragons, all above a border of curling lotus lappets, the apron carved with ruyi heads, scrolls and acanthus leaves, the slender cabriole legs terminating in ruyi heads, all supported by a square stretcher on bracket feet

Condition
The top has a filled shrinkage measuring approx. 0.4cm wide. There are minor chips and losses to the extremities, including the edges of the flared waist and the legs. There are consolidated cracks to the sides, the shoulders and the four legs. Scratches and surface wear, including an approx. 6cm horizontal scratch along the lotus lappets. Traces of glue along the four feet, possibly re-attached.

本品典雅秀麗，精工雕琢，展現十八世紀巧工絕藝。本品高腰透雕夔龍如意紋、牙條上部環飾蓮瓣，隱現廣式傢俱裝飾風格。根據田家青表示，蓮瓣紋與佛像須彌寶座相若，見〈The Art of Decorative Carving on Qing Dynasty Furniture〉，《Orientations》，1996年5月，頁51。
紐約蘇富比曾兩度出售相類作例，分別為2006年9月21日，編號37，及2010年3月23日，編號168；一例售於紐約佳士得2008年9月17日，編號163；另一對例售於香港佳士得2009年5月21日，編號1812。Giuseppe Salvago Raggi侯爵收藏另見硬木香几一對，造型紋飾俱類近本品，售於倫敦蘇富比2012年5月16日，編號141。北京故宮博物館藏有一成對作例，雕纏枝花卉紋，圖錄於胡德生，《故宮博物院藏明清宮廷家具大觀》，卷1，北京，2007年，圖版317。
紫檀木極其珍貴，質地潤澤如玉，材質緻密堅硬，光華內斂，乃清宮造辦處木作坊最名貴之傢具素材，明清宮廷作坊採用木材中，以紫檀為至臻極品。紫檀生長於廣東及廣西省一帶，成長速度緩慢，供應稀少。由於過度砍伐，至清代被採伐殆盡，乾隆一朝嚴格控制紫檀之使用，僅限用於宮廷作坊。
