The carving is in good condition with the exception of small chip to the top of the rockwork. It should be noted that the stone is of a very slightly more pale celadon-white tone than the cataologue illustration would suggest.

文人雅士素喜以雕像紙鎮等陳設裝飾文案，本件即為其中臻品佳例，白玉華滋半透，雕工精巧別緻，儒雅清蘊。乾隆鍾愛王羲之（303 - 361年）書法，蒐集王氏《快雪時晴帖》與王獻之（344 - 386年）《中秋帖》及王珣（350 - 410年）《伯遠帖》（王獻之為王氏第七子，王珣為族侄），視為稀世之珍 ，並存於養心殿「三希堂」。

本品刻劃王氏以白鵝為伴，表情溫和，神態輕鬆，逸致悠然。相傳王羲之愛鵝，嘗以《道德經》書法換鵝。亦有說其觀察鵝頸俯仰伸曲，悟書法運筆神髓，融書法之道於自然。觀賞本玉雕，思王氏愛鵝之意趣，其樂無窮也。

有一類近筆山作例，刻劃文士倚石休憩，售於紐約蘇富比2007年3月19日，編號3；另有一例，文人手持如意，售於倫敦蘇富比1996年6月11日，編號199；尚有一例，曾展於《中國玉雕》，香港市政局，1983年，編號176。
