Executed in 2003, DRAWING RESTRAINT 8: Condition 2003 is one of the most materially compelling iterations from Matthew Barney’s ongoing project DRAWING RESTRAINT, one of two principal series that—alongside The Cremaster Cycle—constitute Barney’s artistic output over his career. A translucent glass-green polycarbonate vitrine displays a sequence of six framed ethereal drawings, within a closed system that is enveloped from within by a pale lemon crystalline substance. Begun while he was still an undergraduate at Yale in 1987, Barney continues to produce DRAWING RESTRAINT installments, exploring the themes of bodily disfigurement, muscular atrophy and the organic systems that pervade his most complex sagas.

The DRAWING RESTRAINT 8 project was first exhibited at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and a full-scale survey of the entire project to date, including the present work, was the subject of a significant international exhibition, originating in Japan in 2005, travelling to Korea and closing at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2006. As a testament to DRAWING RESTRAINT's momentous art historical significance, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in conjunction with the Laurenz Foundation in Basel, acquired the archive of the project in 2010.
