註：烏鴉在中國多見於北方，故白石老人畫鴉始於定居北京後。所畫皆白頸鴉，黑袍加身，白頸似鏈，尤具英姿靈氣。乾隆年間沈起鳳〈諧鐸〉有「祥鴉」篇，一改俗傳「鵲報吉，鴉報兇」之說，讚烏鴉能 「識人於未遇時也」。白石畫鴉亦多重含義，「八哥解語偏饒舌，鸚鵡能言有是非。省卻人間煩惱事，斜陽古樹看鴉歸。」讚的是烏鴉不善於鳴，少惹是非。本幅所題「鴉目見野狐類則鳴」，似以鴉暗喻不隨時流、不附邪僻者，莫非老人有自況之意？
