註：〈秋瓜〉一畫，相類構圖及題跋見於高劍父筆下有多幀，因尺幅大小而佈置稍異，所錄詩句有「荒城」「山城」一字之別，細察之，枝節微末處，或修飾，或增削，或精或簡，變化俱在隱微中。從寫生吸取養料而得狀物逼真之技巧，盡現於秋瓜果實處理上，其凹凸、陰暗、肌理，極得物體之質感，與花葉枝蔓之相連糾結，攝自然生態之趣。他反覆為之，無一不精，如此構圖，日後在嶺南畫派第二代趙少昂作品中亦有效法。又畫家於四八年底自述中，謂廣州淪陷前夕，與門人於四會暫避，該處為山城，其居所隔墻即為瓜圃，朝夕為晤，遂畫瓜焉」 ，且多奇形異種，畫興更濃，「不一月，畫瓜約十餘幀」。由此可推斷本幅約
為四十年代初所寫。
