註:〈秋瓜〉一畫,相類構圖及題跋見於高劍父筆下有多幀,因尺幅大小而佈置稍異,所錄詩句有「荒城」「山城」一字之別,細察之,枝節微末處,或修飾,或增削,或精或簡,變化俱在隱微中。從寫生吸取養料而得狀物逼真之技巧,盡現於秋瓜果實處理上,其凹凸、陰暗、肌理,極得物體之質感,與花葉枝蔓之相連糾結,攝自然生態之趣。他反覆為之,無一不精,如此構圖,日後在嶺南畫派第二代趙少昂作品中亦有效法。又畫家於四八年底自述中,謂廣州淪陷前夕,與門人於四會暫避,該處為山城,其居所隔墻即為瓜圃,朝夕為晤,遂畫瓜焉」 ,且多奇形異種,畫興更濃,「不一月,畫瓜約十餘幀」。由此可推斷本幅約
為四十年代初所寫。
