lightly constructed with shallow everted sides flaring from a recessed base to a lobed rim, divided into six lobes by small ridges evenly radiating around the cavetto, the recessed interior delicately inlaid in mother-of-pearl with a single prunus spray in the centre (possibly later) and a thin lobed frame outlining the cavetto, the iridescent shell slivers detailed with fine incisions, the lustrous lacquer of deep chocolate-brown colour picked out with fine horizontal crackles, the rim encircled with metal

Condition

There are expected minor age cracks to the lacquer as visible in the catalogue illustration. There is a minute chip to the lacquer on the footring and expected minute flakes and fritting at the joint between the lacquer and the metal rim, occasionally stabilized with light touch up, but overall the dish has been extremely well preserved. The mother-of-pearl inlay on the interior is in very good condition. It is possible that the inlay was done slightly in date than the actual production of the dish.

宋著名理學家、思想家朱熹〈1130-1200〉在解釋《易經》時曰,「王本說『元亨利貞』為大亨利正,夫子以為四德,梅初生為元,開花為亨,結子為利,成熟為貞…」。古人賦梅花以四德,從花開結子的過程,領悟了陰陽轉易的人生哲理。此盤的紋飾似乎在提醒人們冰雪融化、燕子南歸、春暖花開、一元復始的天地;優雅的葵花形帶著生命力;材質及工藝表現了生命的堅韌;光滑溜手的器面充滿了萬象更新的希望。此源自宋朝的漆盤不但體現了工匠高超的工藝,也展現大自然在人們生活中所扮演的角色。中國傳統文化思想與大自然混為一體,從大自然中找尋純潔、和諧、公義和謙卑。

此盤在芸芸宋朝漆器中甚為重要,令人賞心悅目,器形和紋飾的和諧結合展現了工匠的鬼斧神工。美國底特律藝術學院藏兩件相似但光素無紋飾例,見《海外遺珍‧漆器》,台北,1987年,圖34及50,前者髹黑漆,為宋朝作品;後者髹朱漆,元朝作品。一組五件較大的例子2010年5月31日於香港佳士得拍賣,編號2024。另一件較大的葵式盤1980年7月15日於倫敦蘇富比拍賣,編號212。另一件2009年5月27日於香港佳士得拍賣,編號1898。

此類葵式盤盤心多為圓形,如東京出光美術館藏例,同前註,圖33。另一件稍小,髹黑漆,金屬口的圓底盤,曾展於《宋元の美 :伝来の漆器を中心に》,根津美術館,東京,2004年,編號17,同展覽中另有一件朱漆者,與此盤尺寸相仿。李氏家族藏一件類似的盤,2008年12月3日於香港佳士得拍賣,編號2109,同樣為朱漆圓底。另一圓底例為Dubosc收藏,曾展出於Eskenazi舉辦的展覽,見《Chinese Lacquer from the Jean-Pierre Dubosc Collection and Others》,倫敦,1992年,編號2;同展覽中另有一件同為Dubosc收藏的黑漆盒,蓋面嵌螺鈿折枝梅花,見編號9。

此盤的紋飾如林業強在《疊彩:抱一齋藏中國漆器》,香港中文大學文物館,2010年,頁72中曰:「盤心斷紋明顯,螺鈿嵌於斷紋之上,橫跨斷紋,疑是出現斷紋後始行加嵌螺鈿,年代或約在元、明年間。」關於嵌螺鈿,林氏認為由宋開始用薄螺鈿,「專供鑲嵌輕巧薄胎器物」。他提到製造過程甚為繁複,「先將原料用水煮上數天或數周,撕成薄片,然後根據畫好的圖案剪成小塊貼在器物表面,再在其上塗上黑漆,最後磨去表層漆料,便會顯露螺鈿嵌砌的圖案。」舊金山亞洲藝術博物館藏一件宋朝嵌螺鈿盤,見《海外遺珍‧漆器》,同前註,圖38,盤上嵌折枝菊花。舊金山亞洲藝術博物館藏另藏一件嵌梅花的黑漆插屏,同前註,圖49。

葵式漆盤源自宋朝瓷器造型,例見一件青白釉盤,載於《宋元の美:伝来の漆器を中心に》,同前註,圖22;另有兩件同造型的定窰盤,見圖23、24。
