of three-tiered octagonal form with straight sides, supported on a slightly recessed splayed foot, decorated overall in the hakue technique on a red lacquer ground, the raised top with an equestrian approaching a large pavillion, preceeded by an attendant carrying a wrapped qin and followed by another holding a canopy umbrella, surrounded by different landscapes or figural scenes enclosed in barbed panels on the bombé sides, the side walls similarly decorated with barbed panels containing either a landscape or a phoenix, all reserved on diaper ground, the foot picked out with key-fret, the interior and base lacquered in black

There is overall tarnishing and wear to the lacquer and gilding (showing on the catalogue illustration), and the decoration is rubbed in areas. There are a few chips to the black lacquer on the interior rims and on the footrim. The interior rim of the central tier has been re-lacquered. There is further retouching or re-lacquering in areas.
