of rectangular form with straight sides and rounded corners, set in front with two horizontal lock plates centred with a hinged clasp, and flanked by angular handles on the sides, finely decorated overall in gold lacquer on a black lacquer ground, the front with a large barbed panel enclosing a court lady and her entourage standing on a garden terrace next to a large rock, all reserved on a floral diaper ground, the hinged cover and sides decorated with sprays of flowers and butterflies above a border of key-fret, the reverse picked out with a single red iris

The gilding is somewhat rubbed on the top but the decorating on the front side and reverse have been well preserved with expected tarnishing and occasional wear commensurate with age. There is some retouching to the lacquer along the edges but overall the box is in good condition.
