finely carved in openwork, depicting a scholar on a rocky promontory holding a branch of chrysanthemum, leaning against the root of an aged pine tree bearing clusters of needles, next to sprays of lingzhi issuing from the ground, the root of pale golden brown colour

There is a chip to the tip of the pine tree, with the tip-end section missing.

本品竹雕，意取名賦《歸來去兮辭》中之 「三径就荒，松菊犹存」二句。本詩為東晉詩人陶淵明（約365-427）遁出仕途後所創，抒感寄思之情頗深。可比一相類作例，鄧孚嘉製，藏上海博物館，展於《竹鏤文心：竹刻珍品特集》，上海，2012年，編號033及封面。
