在《倫敦景象》系列裡,吉爾伯特與喬治嘗試刻劃當代都市生活的荒誕一面,以及其中時有可見的各種暴力。這個系列旨在講述倫敦的真實故事,試圖創造出一種當代城鎮風貌。兩位藝術家在數年間,於倫敦的各個角落偷偷撕下3712張印有報紙頭條的海報,將海報上的新聞主題分類,再創作成292張畫作。作品的畫面粗暴而煽情,圍繞著性、金錢、種族與宗教等與倫敦關係密切的主題。
是次拍品《性與金錢》中,以近乎抽象化的手法呈示倫敦的城市建築,上面加上紅黑大字,營造成強烈對比,這些字詞來自各種法庭案件,全部涉及與性有關的訴訟,或是與性騷擾有關的官司。一如以往,兩位藝術家亦出現於作品上,不過相比之下,這份作品的大字比藝術家本身形象更為突出。吉爾伯特與喬治在接受《華爾街日報》(2012年3月1日,Linda Blake訪問報導)訪問時憶述:「我們希望文字在上,其他一切都在其後。我們完全不想要高質素的影像。我們希望它能夠顯得非常隨意。」
他們表示,這個系列是自由的見證。「在一些城市,這種文字並不可能存在。某程度上來說,它在歌頌自由,以及隨之而來的危險。我們以單一主題或字詞把海報分組。(我記得)有一刻,整個畫室都貼滿了這些海報,讓我們不禁戚然動容,」喬治說,「這真的是我們生活的世界嗎?這真是一個如此不堪、令人絕望的憂傷之地嗎?」
吉爾伯特與喬治於1967年在倫敦聖馬丁藝術學院認識,1969年首個共同創作面世,題為「會唱歌的活雕塑」,將創作者本身變成作品的主題及塑材,把兩人的藝術世界和日常生活完美地融合為一。此後,他們不時以「活雕塑」形象現身博物館及畫廊。二人在1971年開始創作首件「方格排列」作品,把畫面分成多個方格,並將之發展成為標誌風格。多年來,他們作品的意象越來越豐富,蘊含無窮無盡的層層涵義,從符號化的、寓言性的、放任露骨的、以至與宗教、政治及個人相關的各種主題均包羅其中。不過,無論藝術品的涵義如何複雜,他們總是有辦法讓作品的基本意思明確易懂,而且充分展示個人風格,讓觀眾輕易認出創作者。正如其創作宣言《我們的藝術意味著什麼》中所述,「我們希望作品能夠穿越知識的壁壘,直接對人們講述與其自身生活有關的事情,而不是灌輸藝術知識。」
