谷文達是在國際上最受認可、得獎無數的中國當代藝術家之一,他的作品是後現代主義和後殖民地時期國際主義的代表,對二十一世紀的藝術發展影響深刻。谷文達備受爭議的作品包含了身份、語言、傳統等錯綜複雜的主題。谷文達自己的人生經歷與中國今日許多文化菁英相若,其作品巧妙地道出不同文化間的碰撞與挑戰。他於一九五五年出生於上海的一個富裕家庭,一九七〇年代加入紅衛兵。文化大革命結束後在杭州美術學院隨陸儼少習書法與山水畫,一九八七年移居美國後世界觀頓時產生巨變。
所謂書畫同源,谷文達既然是受傳統教育的山水畫家,著迷於文字並不足為奇。其「偽文字」系列是對於圖像和文字間千絲萬縷關係的評點。此畫為「風」與「景」二字的結合,雖實際上此字不可讀出,但「風景」一詞卻可清晰意會。一片抽象的水墨背景襯托著這妙想天開的文字組合,展現「墨分五色」之說。谷文達顛覆傳統,將文字公然變成山水畫中的焦點,形成他自己的藝術語言。其構圖挑戰敘事與理解間的關係,也反映出傳統承繼與現代改革之間的互動。此畫中的風景其實只是染上抽象墨色的一塊平面,書法也並非傳統概念上的書法,僅僅一個「偽文字」罷了。但觀者通過自己的理解,辨認出書法與山水的連貫性,無需糾結於具體表達方式。谷文達隨霍米•巴巴、米歇爾•傅柯和蓋婭特里•史碧瓦克的哲理思想而行,針對我們對世界的認知提出疑問,我們見到的也正是我們視而不見的。
