吳山明是「浙派人物畫」的最具代表性的人物。從少年求學浙江美院附中到就讀浙江美院,后留校任教至今,吳山明的藝術道路已走過六十年矣。
在課徒授業的同時,吳山明一直筆耕不輟,勤奮探索水墨人物畫的新思路。在五十年代末至六十年代初的求學苦讀時期,西畫素描亦成為水墨畫系的必修課。
下鄉寫生採風是是一九四九年后中國藝術院校的一項重要科目,這種傳統一直延續至今。吳山明正是在西部高原採風的經歷中,那裡的人間淨土、強烈的光照、朴實虔誠的人民,深深觸發了吳山明的創作激情,僅用傳統的方式、技法已經不能充分呈現出藝術表達力,促就了他畫風的變革。
他把傳統水墨與西畫素描觀念結合融匯在人物畫裡,用宿墨,淡墨,用線,拓展了意筆人物畫的新技法,且一發不可收拾,並形成他獨特的樣貌。其作品最突出之處是宿墨的運用與中鋒用筆,並強化了水在畫面中的變化。
《問道》(拍品編號35) 突出的體現出吳山明在意筆人物畫技法上的成熟,近景中僧侶的描繪刻畫結實飽滿,其中一人雙手合十,眼神堅毅虔誠,一人閉目誦經。遠山清瀝,意境淡雅。
