「天籟石」,原為水松石山房主人莫士撝先生(Hugh Moss)舊藏。一九九一年夏,劉丹在英國南部的一個避暑莊園,與莫氏暢聚十數日。臨別時,莫氏忽出天籟石見示。
上世紀八〇年代,劉丹已是一位「欲尚則淩於雲氣,欲下則入於深泉」的應物以形的翹楚。移居紐約之後,專注于現代主義藝術創作與研究,然仍不變一派林泉人物的風度,遙羨古人,好藏成習。是次遊歷英倫,恰適欲覓佳石,以為傳模之本,苦不可得之時,驟見奇物,竟呆了。劉丹事後回憶:「如墮夢中,惟以相見恨晚為憾」。
莫氏見畫家一副悵惘不知所措的樣子,問道:「先生欲得一石,用以師之造化?若如此,我欣然割愛。」
劉丹慨然道:「世之幸遇,乃有如此,所謂前緣。」
區區一石,名曰「天籟」,似失原旨。石之竅穴孔洞,無風寂默,「泠風則小和,飄風則大和,厲風濟則眾竅為虛」,此「地籟」也。然萬吹不同,生髮與息止,齊物於自生,生滅之真宰並不糾纏於「或使他生」與「莫為自生」。石雖無命,有生也,凡合乎大道,玲瓏拳石亦可塊然自生,生髮出「天籟」的「萬竅怒呺」。
劉丹得藏天籟石,臥起與俱,遐觀手摹,其繪法一變,盡搜天下奇石,將之流思、悠憩、寄傲、倦塵、望引,甚至懼隔,筆墨于孤石長題之中。
難以想像,天籟石既是劉丹繪事逆溯傳統的變法開端,也是這位現代藝術大師漸行漸修地走向「天道合一」的始點。
