Condition

The netsuke is in very good overall condition. The colour of the ivory of a slightly more yellowish tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.

Compare two ivory netsuke of a single shishi with ball, with Okatomo signatures. One with right forepaw on the ground, was in the W. W. Winkworth collection, illustrated in The Meinertzhagen Card Index (Part B, p. 620) and was latterly in the Katchen collection (see Netsuke 7, vol. I, pp. 84-85, n°K430). The other one, with both forepaws on the ball was in George Cohen's collection and is best illustrated in Barry Davie's catalogue of R. Huthart's Non-Iwami netsuke, n°87.
