Jadeite, known as feicui in Chinese, originated in modern-day Burma and appeared in China somewhat late in history. The Qianlong-Jiaqing reigns (1736-1820) and the Cixi regency (1861-1908) were the two most important periods of jadeite production. As the material was precious, jadeite was used mostly for small personal ornaments including court necklaces, thumb rings, pendants and rosary bracelets such as the present lot. For an example from the Imperial collection similarly comprising jadeite and tourmaline beads, see Gugong zhenbao, Beijing, 2004, p. 123.
Condition
The jadeite and tourmaline beads in the bracelet are in overall very good condition. The oval tourmaline plaque is broken into several parts and there is a ca. 1cm wide part of the upper part of the double-gourd shaped bead broken and missing. The silk string is broken and the bracelet has been provisionally restrung. The colour of the jadeite beads is of a warmer, more apple-green tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The tourmaline beads are more translucent and the colour a softer tone.
