Condition

The bowl is in overall very good condition. The cover has a ca. 5 cm wide crescent-shaped part comprising four small pieces broken out of the rim with old restoration. The pigments on the bowl and cover show light wear.

Several similarly covered ivory bowls with carved and stained designs are known. An example formerly in the Qing Court collection, is illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, p. 218, fig. 166.
