Condition
This work is in very good condition. There are faint hairline scratches towards the right bottom which are only visible upon close inspection as well as minor wear to the right top edge. Neither is intrusive to the image. Under UV, one can see two small touch ups on the figure's breast and forearm respectively.

何多苓1948年生於四川成都,是1980年代中國「傷痕美術」的代表,亦為抒情寫實主義油畫的代言人。早年於四川美術學院學習油畫時,他崇拜印象派藝術家雷諾瓦(Renoir)、竇加(Degas)以及美國現實主義大師安德魯‧懷斯(Andrew Wyeth)。何多苓欣賞雷諾瓦作品的美、竇加的冷靜客觀,以及懷斯對鄉土的關懷。尤其是懷斯作品中透露出的淡淡憂傷、孤獨與荒涼深深的影響了他早年的創作。於1985年從美國考察回國後,他開始反思其繪畫路徑,風格逐年變化,試圖將中國傳統人文畫融入自己的油畫裡,開啟了獨樹一格的藝術,他既不落入純寫實的追逐,亦不完全投入當代藝術的懷抱,致力追求抽象和寫實之間的對話。
從2000年開始,何多苓以一系列的人體畫開啟新的藝術探索。此次蘇富比上拍的《失樂園》和《樂園》為藝術家近作,皆曾被博物館收藏,並參加第53屆威尼斯國際藝術雙年展特別機構邀請展(A collateral event for the 53rd Biennale di Venezia)〈給馬可波羅的禮物〉(A Gift to Marco Polo),由中國知名策展人和藝術史專家呂澎策展,參展藝術家除了何多苓,更邀集其他八位重量級中國當代藝術家張曉剛、周春芽、王廣義、方力均、岳敏君等人,試圖表現中西當代藝術交流過程中的問題與複雜性,也關注中國當代藝術的傳承與發展,足見此展的重要性。
從標題來看,《失樂園》讓人聯想到英國詩人約翰‧彌爾頓(John Milton)所創作的史詩中,描繪聖經內亞當與夏娃被撒旦誘惑的故事。然而,何多苓的畫作並不演繹此涵義,他想表現的是一個中國傳統文人追求的超脫境界。藝術家年輕的時候專心學習西畫,但隨著年紀增長,他希望回歸自身文化,在油畫中尋找中國人的身分。《失樂園》的女主角眼神朦朧望向觀者,迷失在一清冷孤寂的森林中,女孩憂鬱的神情面容和肌膚幾乎與藍灰色背景融成一片。穿著時尚短裙的女孩和荊棘叢生的森林格格不入,彷彿正尋找迷宮的出路。何多苓已從早期受懷斯影響的寫實創作技巧解放,《失樂園》中朦朧的神祕虛無主義,亦是藝術家所嚮往的中國文人畫時時傳達出的孤寂冷調。雖不追求純粹的寫實,但他對造型處理和畫布細微的層次感依然精準,背景的荊棘樹林以中國書畫的皴、擦、點、染等筆法完成,不強調光源對比,女主角和周遭環境的差異被虛化,作品瀰漫著藝術家追求天人合一的唯美與抒情氛圍。
