「這些年來,我盡量避免去接觸世界的新潮藝術,為的是讓我自己的藝術向泥土紮根,不要受干擾,我要自己成長起來,從中國的文化背景中,從台灣的氣候中,從中國人身後的民族感情中脫孕出來。於是我走向民間。從這個鄉村,到那個村莊,住在小鎮上,巷弄間,看那古老的桓牆上的斜陽,坐在古屋的陰影裡。浸淫在即將消失的『中國面貌』之中,我要找一個答案:『什麼是中國的?』故宮裡的那些高貴典雅的寶物,不曾給我多少啟示。反而是鄉下的那些棄置在竹林溝邊的土陶罐,鄉民的紅磚房子,笨重的傢俱,木雕的神像,廟宇的色彩…它們解答了我的問題。
我看到一個更廣大的中國,一個無限地在創造的靈魂,生機旺盛,一個未為人所知的中國面貌,動徹肺腑,震撼心魄。於是我生活其中,深深地去感受,改造我自己,豐富我的心靈,我去畫,也拍照,傾聽著他們無聲的語言,與他們融合,時間的界線已化為烏有,物與我已成渾然一體。」
