This work is in very good condition. There are signs of aging, notably along the edges, but not intrusive to the image.

1969年,席德進開始勤練秦漢碑帖,書法的一筆一畫、剛柔緩急的練習,讓他沉澱下來,明心見性,在過程中,他也深深地體會到了「骨法用筆」的奧妙,讓他在線條繪畫的處理,有了更多自然、豐富的表情與力量。完成於1970年的《樹蔭下》,作品展現深濃的筆墨韻味,在大樹的處理上,觀者可感受到那強韌有力,剛中帶柔的線條一一化為枝幹 ,支撐起如扇面往外開展的濃密綠葉,生命堅實與柔韌的兩股力量在此並存。眼前一片綠意盎然,綠蔭如傘,庇護著大地,與憩歇在樹腳下的人們。作品令人想起台灣鄉土文學代表人物王祿松所寫的一首新詩〈鄉情〉,他是這麼寫的:「倘說大樹是兩根銅柱,人,便是海底的小魚,歇在廟宇的磯礁之旁…啊,畫家,你用樹點啟了兩盞大燈,守住這一片遼闊的鄉野的天空,燈啊,灼灼生華,朗光永極,它永無熄滅之日,而我們的鄉野之愛,亦一如星月相守,雲天展現,永遠無離失之時。」作品含納藝術家對於質樸的鄉野、自然之愛,亦勾起人們於樹下玩耍、乘涼,那無憂的童年回憶。
