Condition

This piece is in very good condition. There is a stable minor hairline crack on the impasto, about 1 centimeter in length, 5 centimeters from the left edge and 30 centimeters from the bottom edge. The right edge shows abrasion, which has been caused by the framing, but it does not affect the actual image. The bottom right edge also has two tiny specks of paint loss, only visible under close inspection. Under UV light, there are scattered touch-ups along the four edges.

回顧席德進的創作之路,我們可以發現,他是個勇於革新的藝術家。他曾自述,在許多的夜晚,他反覆思索著相同的課題——處在現今的時空,要如何能創作出代表時代的繪畫?對於藝術,他認為:「我們不是在畫一幅美好的畫就行了,我們要創作一種開路的畫!」而正是這種與時俱進的藝術追求,促使席德進自1957年起的十年間,投入了抽象繪畫的試煉,並引領了台灣現代繪畫的發展。他曾說:「現代絕非與傳統脫節、對立,它是關連的。現代又是嶄新的,是前所未有的,一種新的信仰。」而如何呈現這種新信仰?完成於1963年的《夜雨過後》,無非是了解席德進的最佳途徑。

席德進在畫中捨棄線條及具體的描繪,以大塊的藍、紫與黃綠色面來構圖。這些原本抽象的色塊,在皴擦、渲染中,竟交織成一個山巒遞嬗,氤闔朦朧,若煙雲山水的畫境,讓人由衷讚嘆,並聯想到盛唐詩人王維筆下「風日暢懷抱,山川多秀氣,高情浪海嶽,浮生寄天地。」的詩情。而畫中明艷、富麗的藍彩、帶有中國山水畫的氣韻,亦與張大千著名的潑墨畫作有巧妙的呼應。回顧1960年代初期,席德進與大千於畫展中相識,大千非常欣賞他的作品,曾表達欲購藏的心願,席德進在驚喜之餘,主動贈畫,年齡相距逾二十歲的兩人,由此因緣結為好友,並時常交流對於藝術的想法。大千在1960年代以獨創的潑墨技法為傳統中國水墨帶來新穎的現代表達;1963年他更將青綠、湛藍的色彩應用在潑墨中,形成「潑彩」。席德進的《夜雨過後》與大千的潑彩畫年份相近,兩人或互有啟發,相互影響,惟前者用油彩,後者用彩墨,均於藝術上開展了屬於自我獨特的天地。《夜雨過後》在完成後,曾發表於美國維吉尼亞州的亨利畫廊所舉辦的「席德進新作展」,為藝術家該時期重要的創作代表。
