This work is in good condition. There are scattered spots of foxing, inherent to the aging process. Each corner has an artist pinhole, but only the bottom left corner has a light crease. There is a possible tear that has been fixed, around 1 centimeter in length, and 22 centimeters from the top edge.

「作素描，往往是即興的。在一剎那間去抓住一種動態，憑直覺，不用太多的思考去校量，所以畫出來比正式的油畫更傳神、更生動，不致落入陳套。現代畫家們所作的素描，不再是初稿的性質，而是獨立的繪畫了。」

席德進一生曾作數千件素描，此表現形式為其創作的一大支脈。早於1966年，他便曾將作品集結出版素描集，並多次辦展發表，流露對此創作方式的喜愛與重視。

截至1981年藝術家過世前，拿起炭筆在紙上作素描，就像他的生活習慣一般自然，如同書寫日記，記錄他的生活點滴。除了以身邊的友人、生命中的過客、眼見的風景、建築、鄉間的小動物為繪畫的對象，席德進也畫自己，作品亦無聲地透露他無法輕易言說的心事和慾望。如在《上裸男孩》裡，他描寫了一個濃眉大眼，裸著上身的大男孩。他的頭偏向一側，若星燦般的眼眸往下垂望，流露一種屬於青春的質樸與羞澀。在炭筆的勾畫中，男孩的身形與肌肉的量感準確地呈現。當中見藝術家對於人物比例的高度掌握，與思想流動的軌跡。其中有趣的是，畫中人的樣貌，正為現實生活裡藝術家愛戀的男子典型。回顧席德進的一生，他一直渴望愛情，但他從未獲得正面的回應與肯定，這也讓他對愛情產生質疑，如他曾說：「我不知道愛是否有恆久性，它是不是可以尋得一個理想的形像，就永遠對它照耀，永遠對它傾瀉著光芒？」《上裸男孩》在此或也記錄了藝術家的情思，與對愛的嚮往。
