黃榮禧的人間詞話
1948年出生於廣東的黃榮禧,在1966年全家移民至美國,其先後入知名的芝加哥藝術學院與柏克萊加州大學受教,獲美術與文學雙碩士。其作品帶有濃厚敘事風格,援引神話寓言與中國文學,加以轉化並注入自我對當代社會現實的觀察、詼諧的嘲諷與幽默感,讓人過目難忘,並獲藝評家與策展人的青睞,如在1984年,對他作品情有獨鍾的策展人塔克(Marcia Tucker)便邀請他代表「美國國家館」,參加第41屆「威尼斯雙年展」。在早期,該展為藝術界神聖的指標,代表了對藝術家前衛表現的指標性肯定。而在當時,一位華人藝術家能在異地代表國家館參與展出,更為難得。華人抽象藝術大師趙無極曾於1960年代表法國館參加威尼斯雙年展,其為第一人,黃榮禧則為第二。此展讓黃榮禧打開自身的知名度,並確立了他的位置。
是次上拍的雕塑作品《出生》(拍品編號529)《探慾》(拍品編號528),展現其獨樹一格的雕塑風貌。他先以鐵絲架構作品的原型,再將濃稠的油畫顏料當作泥土一般來使用,在反覆堆疊中塑造主體的肌理,其複雜的混色與立體構成的創新手法,賦予了雕塑新的生命。兩件作品援引西方創世紀的神話故事為背景,如《出生》講述的是正採取禁果的夏娃,《探慾》則表現動了凡心的天使,從天上往人間俯瞰、探尋,藝術家以含蓄的方式,巧妙地表達了人們心中的慾望。作品不啻為藝術家90年代晚期的典型創作表徵。
