50年代初期趙無極在歐洲諸國旅行,用刺繡般纖細的黑線條描繪了一系列帶有詩意的風景畫。1953年,趙無極開始了畫風的轉變,他憶述道:「靜物與花朵已不再,畫面出現的是一連串難以解讀的想像書寫。逐漸地,符號變成了形狀;而背景則成了空間。」誕生於此年的《天地牧歌》便是藝術家在這個風格過渡階段的創作。在此作品中,山巒被簡化,村落和人物的形象變得更抽象,任憑觀者聯想。透過背景水彩的暈染,趙無極創造了一個中國文人畫般氤闔飄渺的境象,如夢似幻。
