毛旭輝於一九五六年在重慶出生，一九八二年畢業於雲南藝術學院油畫系，並於一九九六年開始在母校同系執教。他被視為一九九〇年代至今最重要的中國藝術家之一，不但與張曉剛, 潘德海, 和其他藝術家成立了中國當代藝術其中最早期的藝術群體「西南藝術群體」，並參與了一九八九年在北京中國美術館舉辦極具歷史意義的群展「中國現代藝術展」。

早期的〈家長〉系列通過描繪祭壇寶座和黑影，集中表達藝術家對父權的感想，與當時其他藝術家和社會寫實主義所影響的具象繪畫風格截然不同，並直接影響他其後最廣為人知的〈剪刀〉系列。「剪刀」這一圖案在其一九九五年開始的〈日常史詩〉系列中首次出現，油畫中的剪刀圖案探討著日常生活中圖像與權利之間的關係。對比以往作品中的粗獷筆觸與紋理，今次的拍品呈現〈剪刀〉系列中平和靜溢的輕柔色調，可見藝術家的焦點已從早期的權力轉向更高境界的精神領會。
