Under ultraviolet light inspection reveals restoration predominantly on the aqua impastos (located in the middle right, lower right and upper left margins) and a minor touch up on the "A" of the signature. Examination was conducted under the frame. Framed.

Affandi’s approach to painting was an instantaneous reaction with the subject he wished to portray. Governed by intuitions and unfiltered by the restraint of rationality, the artist channels his own subconscious and personal emotions directly from his hands onto his paintings. In Pasar Festival (Festival Market), Affandi effectively captures the exuberance and dynamism at a crowded market. He overlays the canvas with clusters of people, opened umbrellas, flowers, fruit stalls, animals and more, drawing our immediate attention to decipher all that is happening on the canvas. Deliberately collapsing any logical space, Affandi allows his subjects to freely melt into one harmonic, cohesive and artfully ambiguous, boisterous whole. Squeezing paints directly from the tubes onto the canvas, the technique accentuates the air of spontaneity at the festival, while the extremely tactile impastos preserve the vigor of the artist’s broad and quick brushstrokes. Like fireworks, small explosions of reds, blues, greens and yellows command the pictorial space from every direction, conjuring strong celebratory sentiments. Among the swift swirls and fluid strokes is a kinetic force revving the painting to life and momentarily transporting the viewer to the rapture amid the festival market.
