The painting is in good condition overall, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. Indication of light wear and handling is evident around the edges of the painting, but paint layers are well-preserved. Upon close observation, a faint network of craquelure is visible predominantly on the lower register is evident. Examination under ultraviolet light shows no evidence of restoration. Framed.

“Several dated gouaches indicate that Le Mayeur must have been in India in 1921, but we have no other information about this journey. However, we do have a letter from his second trip to India in 1930, which confirms how excited he had been by all he had heard and read about India, so on his first trip he had seen Benares through 'a prism of fantasy'.”
