The work is in good condition overall, as is the board, which is free from warping. There is indication of light wear and handling along the edges. Upon close observation, there is evidence of a light craquelure on the left margin. Under ultraviolet light inspection, there are minor sprinkled restorations along the margins (on the blue paint of the ocean and on the red boat). Framed.

Each and every colour holds a particular meaning, feeling or sensation. Every colour holds a symbolic connotation which can translate into several emotions.

In Pier, Chen Wen Hsi uses colour to create a conversational piece with his audience, inviting us into his world where he is not afraid to share his feelings. Through his audacious use of colour channeled from the fluctuating facets of nature he paints the view from a pier.

Different shades of blues and greens form the colours of the ocean, a light from the centre of the image leads us to the horizon with boats dotted everywhere. You can almost touch and taste the light, shining and glimmering on the surface of the water. Red boats outlined with a thick slur of black paint interrupts this dialogue. The boats cluster together, making the viewer feel warm, giving them a sense of security.

Chen is able to evoke a different interpretation out of every person through his choice of colour. Each and every colour may possess a particular meaning; however the emotion it creates will differ for each individual, making this a very personal piece.
