This work is in good condition overall, including the embroidery vines. The canvas is clear and taut. There is light wear and handling on the edges of the painting. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no evidence of restoration. Unframed, on stretcher.

The present mixed media piece entitled Tree of Life by Filipino artist Geraldine Javier was inspired by the artist's fascination, and affinity with her natural surroundings. It is a depiction of a large shady tree that is the home to different species of birds, each one inhabiting a different branch on the tree. There are seven vitrines that extend throughout over the artwork, with the top four featuring nests that are made up of of sewing materials, such as lace, string and pieces of yarn. Meanwhile on the bottom three vitrines are intricately embroidered pairs of birds, each one housed within their own private space on the tree. Within the Tree of Life each nests symbolizes knowledge and enlightenment, while the birds represent a specific message or truth that the artist wished to convey in the work.

Tree of Life is a stark contrast with the artist’s other mixed media work aptly titled Good vs. Evil - A part of good. That piece featured a skeletal tree that was accompanied by a flock of birds that colored the work with a sense of foreboding and fear. However in the Tree of LIfe, she expresses an optimism as seen from the affection and intimacy that is expressed between the birds. As per the title of the present piece, Javier is embracing life, respecting all things great and small within the artwork.

Each bird’s nest is special and unique, and is a reflection of the bird that made it. This act of creation may be viewed as self-expression in its purest form, and Javier parallels this with her career as an artist. Tree of Life is a celebration and homage to life in its complete,and awesome entirety.
