The artist Jon Jaylo shares his story through a myriad of symbols embedded in his imaginative painting. The narrative in The Value Of Life speaks of hope for the future generation. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the scene suggests a young boy who has travelled from a place unknown with the purpose to rescue the current condition. In the background are hot air balloons occupied by his companions who are also about to descend onto the post-catastrophic, barren land. The boy is wearing remnant pieces of technology that he will utilize to rebuild the civilization. His cheerful and omnipotent presence represents the promise of the future.

The protagonist is dressed in anachronistic attire composed of a pastiche of styles from different eras: a Victorian top-hat decorated with a vintage clock at the center and a pair of futuristic goggles on the brim, a classic waistcoat paired with a bowtie and an everyday long-sleeves top under a short sleeves shirt. He secures a large hourglass between both arms like a trophy that he has just earned. The inscription of “Alpha” on the lid and “Omega” at the base signifies the beginning and end of time. A goldfish is living inside the upper half of the hourglass, transforming it into a fishbowl, while water slowly drips down to the bottom of the hourglass. This motif symbolizes mortality and the innocent goldfish could be interpreted as the inherent naiveté of humans. The cheerful imagery is emphasized by the undulating lyrics from the popular song “What a Wonderful World” and musical notations that are floating on the upper register of the canvas.

The composition of The Value Of Life is reminiscent of the Steampunk style. Jaylo wants to bring back the glory of the industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. The Victorian era, epitomized by “steam power,” is characterized by scientific discovery and invention, whose philosophical principle is based on utilitarianism. The present painting hence addresses the exigency in human existence, and that it is to live with purpose, meaning and fight for the greater good of humanity. Hidden behind the young boy’s smile is precisely this hope for a better world.
